EARS on Shanghai will bring 100+ international leaders from the performing arts, design, visual arts and festival & event industries and representatives from foreign government agencies to Shanghai to network and share best practices with their Chinese counterparts.

The program will include successive half-day music, performing arts, media and design panels, roundtables and networking sessions, covering topics important to today’s creative industries.

This year, EARS on Shanghai will also include concert events, design exhibitions and more!

WHERE?  何地?

EARS on Shanghai is organised with the support of new lifestyle company Octave. Octave will host EARS on Shanghai 2013 in conjunction with the soft launch of their new flagship space in the former French Concession.

Octave is a lifestyle and learning concept that embraces a holistic approach to self-care and personal transformation. Through the development of purpose build real estate, hospitality and learning businesses octave provides a platform for a lifestyle of mindfulness, health, and well-being.

DESIGN SHANGHAI   上海艺术设计展

EARS is proud to announce a partnership with Design Shanghai. EARS on Shanghai is one of the main events of the festival’s opening week.

Design Shanghai is a biennale that began in 2000 as the Shanghai Design Exhibition and which has six successful exhibitions under its belt to date. It aims to promote the development of creative design in Shanghai, foster innovative and pioneering designers and forge a distinctly Shanghainese brand.

Ed Bennett – CEO Bennett Media Studio, Former CEO, MTV Networks

Ed Bennet owns Bennett Media Studio (BMS) and 723 Washington Studios in New York City.
 He also owns his own record label, film/television company, and talent management agency. 
A published writer, song lyricist, music composer and recorded musician, Ed serves on the Board of The Songwriters Guild of America Foundation. Mr. Bennett is the former CEO of VH1, MTV Network’s 24-hour music and lifestyle network.

Ed has also been publicly recognized for his professional and personal work, and is the recipient of the American Civil Liberty Union’s Torch of Liberty Award, an honor he shares with Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, Gregory Peck,and Harry Belafonte.

Shen Yue – Executive partner, Modern Sky Entertainment, Ltd.

Formed in 1997, Modern Sky Entertainment is the leading music entertainment company in mainland China. Modern Sky Entertainment companies include Modern Sky Concerts, mainland China’s leading festival and concert event producer and China’s largest independent record label, Modern Sky Records.

Modern Sky’s Strawberry Music Festival series is produced throughout cities in mainland China. The Strawberry Music Festival Beijing is China’s biggest, with 150K+ attendees over three days in early May.

出口(EXIT)音乐节创始人
Founded in 2000, EXIT is the biggest music festival in Southeast Europe. The annual four-day summer event takes place in the Petrovaradin Fortress of Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia. Now being one of Europe’s premier music festivals, EXIT began as a political rally for the Serbian youth. In 2007, the Association of the 70 largest festivals in Europe awarded EXIT the “Best European Festival” of the year. During these years, EXIT has hosted a massive list of international headliners, organized concerts, parties, art performances and started environmental initiatives throughout Serbia.

Currently Bošković and Stamenov are creating a new company specialized in concepts creation in music/festivals and marketing/communication consulting.

Kai Amberla – Executive Director of Finland Festivals  执行董事
Kai Amberla began his career in the arts as a journalist working as Editor-in-chief on Finland’s only professional classical music magazine Rondo. After that he was invited to assume the post of Executive Director of the Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras. In 2002 he was appointed as Executive Director in the Finnish Music Information Centre.

In 2007 he become the Executive Director of Finland Festivals, a collaboration forum for Finland’s leading cultural events, with nearly one hundred affiliated events. Amberla works also as consultant for several music foundations and organizations.

Michael Vonplon – Event manager & Promoter, Founder of Miro China
Michael Vonplon was drawn to Beijing in 1996 after living for three years in Hong Kong. Not only did he want to learn Mandarin, he was curious also to experience China’s emergent youth in close-up: their aspirations, their rebelliousness, and their quest for their own identity. Right away he dived into the music scene and among other things is known for organizing China’s first rave party on the Great Wall 1998. In the meantime, this Chinese vocation has become a full-time profession for a Zurich native whose initial training was in logistics management.

Vonplon founded the company “Miro China,” whose “China Drifting” label is exclusively devoted to Swiss-Chinese exchange projects. In 2013 he launched the cultural agency “rundum events,” which as its name (all-round events) suggests, specializes in the organization and promotion of a broad variety of cultural events.

Antti Silvennoinen – CEO & Co-Founder of Music Kickup
Antti Silventoinen is an award winning creative industry professional and musician with over 15 years of experience working with some of the worlds largest brands. He has performed over 2000 live shows from the stages of the Finnish National Opera to local pizza parlours and tours. A musicians rights advocate who is interested in people, and their interactions with this world.

Justin West – Founder/President/General Manager of Secret City Records and Secret City Publishing

Justin West is the founder and president/general manager of Secret City Records and Secret City Publishing. The label’s roster includes, among others, such artists as Patrick Watson, Miracle Fortress, Basia Bulat, Plants and Animals, The Barr Brothers, Suuns, and Diamond Rings, and has earned 3 gold record certifications in Canada, a Polaris Music Prize (plus 3 additional nominations), and 7 JUNO award nominations.

Justin oversees all of Secret City’s strategy and day-to-day operations and has grown both the label and publishing company to have global brands and infrastructures. On top of running Secret City, Justin is on the board of directors of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) and is the Canadian representative for the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN), a global forum for the professional independent music industry.

Larys Frogier – Director, Rockbund Art Museum  上海外滩美术馆馆长
Rockbund Art Museum is one of Shanghai’s most esteemed contemporary art museums with also quality performing arts programmes. Larys Frogier is a contemporary art historian with a research PhD at the prestigious School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales). He has also an Advanced Master degree in art history from the University of Rennes in France. He has curated numerous exhibitions and published extensive essays on the works of international artists, among others Adel Abdessemed, Nan Goldin, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Olga Kisseleva, Li Wei, Gianni Motti, Paola Pivi, Ugo Rondinone, Charles Sandison, Kiki Smith, Wang Du, Yang Jiechan.

From 2000 to 2011 Larys was the Director of the contemporary art centre La Criée in the city of Rennes (France) where he facilitated powerful partnerships with international institutions such as Tramway in Glasgow, Maumaus Superior School of Visual Arts in Lisbon, Portikus in Frankfurt, Zak Branicka Foundation in Berlin, Altart Foundation in Cluj and Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

Richard Zhu – Vice President of Musical Theater China & Associate Producer/Director at Fun Age Entertainment
朱峰, 北京西城原创音乐剧基地 副总干事
Richard Feng Zhu graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. He started his career as a professional Musical Theatre Actor who has appeared in the Tony Award Best Musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on Broadway, and also starred in both national tours and regional theatres across the United States. Zhu guest starred on NBC’s hit drama Law and Order: Criminal Intent and also appeared in many other TV programs and Films, as well as voice over and modelling. Zhu founded a NY based production company named ZMM Productions which produced the largest benefit concert for a foreign country in Broadway History.

Apart from his acting career, Zhu started directing and producing in NY with ZMM Productions in 2006, and since his return to China he has directed and co-directed 3 original Musicals, and the current production “The Man (爷们儿)” has set many box office records in Beijing, China. Zhu has dedicated his time and effort in the continuing development of the Musical Theatre Industry in China.

Chung Shefong – Founder of Trees Music and Art; Director of NCCU Art & Culture Center; Assistant Professor, Communication College National Cheng-chi University (NCCU)
Chung Shefong in the founder of the folk and root music label Trees Music and Art. In the past years, Trees Music and Art actively organized and supported their musicians to participate in international projects and performances, and started various cross-cultural music creation projects. Chung and the Trees Music and Art have been commissioned to curate and produce music festivals in various regions/counties in Taiwan.

In 2001, Chung started the Migration Music Festival which is an annual music festival organized around the theme of “migration”. It aims to provide a platform for integrating music and cultural issues and sound experiments. Currently Chung teaches at the College of Communication of the National Cheng-chi University (NCCU) and is the Director of NCCU Art and Culture Center.

Cheung Fai – Associate Artistic Director of Franco Dragone Entertainment Group
张辉, 弗兰克德贡娱乐集团副艺术总监
Cheung Fai is a culture industry veteran with over 30 years of extensive experience in the performing arts, media and marketing, and expertise on Greater China. He was producer of many top theatre, music and dance artists in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, including Lin Zhaohua, Cui Jian, Li Tianlu etc. He has produced many arts festivals in Asia, and was Artistic Advisor and China Program Director of Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels.

In recent years he produced some of the biggest outdoor music festivals in China. As Web Director he created all the pioneering online products of China.com, the first Chinese Internet company to IPO in the USA. He was Editor-in-chief of CrossOver, the most influential arts magazine in Hong Kong in the 1990s. He is also the founder and former CEO of feverchina, a cultural agency based in Beijing and MARVELSCHINA, a marketing agency based in Shanghai.

Betsy Lan – Curator & Teacher at Theatre at Shu-Te University in Kaohsiung  藍貝芝, 樹德科技大學表演藝術系助理教授
Betsy Lan has just retired from her term as the Curator of Taipei Fringe Festival and is teaching Theatre at Shu-Te University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Prior to that, she’s been an actor, singer and independent producer for over ten years. Major credits include International Coordinator for the Taipei Poetry Festival, founding member of V-Day Taipei, producer for the Taiwan Women’s Theatre Festival, and a current board member/international programmer for Women Make Waves Film Festival.

Kwong Wai-lap – Director of Shanghai Cultural Links Management Consulting  邝为立,上海凡朗企业管理咨询有限公司总监
Wai-lap Kwong has spent over 20 years in the arts, as manager and consultant for organisations as diverse as The Macau Cultural Centre (Programme and Marketing Director), The City Contemporary Dance Company (General Manager), Federation of Asia-Pacific for Cultural Promotion (Board of Governors), The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (Drama sub-committee), The Hong Kong Arts Festival (Programme Coordinator), The Asian People’s Theatre Festival (co- director), The Guangdong Xinghai Performing Arts Development Company (Deputy General Manager), Guangzhou Opera House (Advisory Consultant), Programme Director of the most important contemporary dance event in China, the annual Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, International Cultural Industry Fair 2006 (Greater China marketing consultant) and programming consultant for a variety of cultural programs during the Shanghai Expo in 2010.

Lotus Chan – Administration Manager of On & On Theatre Workshop
Lotus Chan is an arts administration, producer, editor, art teacher and work based in Hong Kong. She has a Master degree in Cultural studies from Lingnan University. She started to get involved in local theatre scene after taking part in a workshop, “I-D Generation: A New Age Programe”, held by Onandon Theatre Workshop in 1998. Apart from acting, Lotus has also produced a number of performances that were staged locally and overseas. Recently she is the Administration Manager of Onandon Theatre workshop.

Per Bech Jensen – Executive director at DSI Swinging Europe
Per Bech Jensen is executive director at DSI Swinging Europe where he produces European and national jazz concerts and cultural projects. The company has expanded with several activities since he started in 2010 and DSI Swinging Europe now offers educational programmes for young and talented musicians. Another initiative has been the promotion of Danish music in Asia.

Jensen is vice president in the board of JazzDanmark, board member in the cultural Collaboration Mid- and West Jutland, Board member in Dansk TalentAkademi, Advisory board member IÆK – Drama and Music (Aarhus University) and Member of TIO Committee for international cooperation. He also work within the field of theatre by his work at Odn Teatret and produces and organises his own projects.

Tay Tong – Managing Director of Theatreworks & Director of Arts Network Asia
TheatreWorks is an independent and international performance company based in Singapore. Tay is also the director of Arts Network Asia (ANA). The organization gives micro-grants to artists and cultural workers to develop projects and local creative communities in Asia. In the past three years, ANA has managed the Creative Encounters programme which is a grant that connects Asia and Europe artists and creatives in partnership with the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) based in Singapore.

Teemu Kurkela – Architect JKMM Architects  建筑事务所建筑设计师
Teemu Kurkela (born in 1966) is the CEO of JKMM Architects since 1998. He studied architecture at Columbia University, New York and at Helsinki University of Technology. He designed the Finnish Pavillion for the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai that won the prize for the best pavilion for the mid-sized pavilions. JKMM Architects has a long track record in high quality built work and architectural competitions.

The office has won prizes in nearly 50 architectural competitions, including ca. 20 first prizes. Teemu Kurkela was Professor in the School of Architecture, Helsinki University of Technology. He was the chairman of the Architectural Competition Board, Union of Finnish Architects in 2001-2004. Teemu Kurkela is a Board Member of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Chairman of Advisory Board in Finnish Architectural Review.

Michael Peng – Senior Architect, Senior Associate, Asia Technical Director at Gensler
As a senior architect in Gensler, Michael Peng has participated in the construction of the 632-meter super-tall Shanghai Tower in Pudong. As the core member of the project, Peng has used the cutting-edge digital design platform to optimize the systematic design, enabling the fast implementation of creative and strategic thinking.

Considering his in-depth study in the professional field, Michael has been invited to be keynote speakers in many universities and international seminars. His papers on the design of skyscrapers and the applications of advanced technology have also been published in core periodicals of China and major international publications.

Yandie Yu – Executive Director at Finlandesign Group Ltd.
Yandie Yu has a background in industrial and product design and he has worked in various design & advertising firms, as well as government agencies. In providing services for the likes of Volkswagen, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Toyota, Lexus, Allianz and the Shanghai World Expo; as well as project based work numerous Global Fortune 1000 companies; in the fields of design, events, hospitality and trade; in Italy, United Kingdom, Finland and China.

Finlandesign is the portal for the promotion, understanding and expansion of Finnish Design in China. Finlandesign home is company’s concept showcase of Finnish Design & Living opening to public on 5th December 2013 in Shanghai.

Yrjö Kukkapuro – Interior Architect & Furniture Designer
Yrjö Kukkapuro is one of the central figures of Finnish functionalism. Kukkapuro has been working as a freelance designer since the 1950′s and much of the furniture he designed at the beginning of his career is still in production. In addition to his creative work Kukkapuro is an active lecturer and product developer. In recent years he has co-operated with the Chinese on the UNESCO-sponsored bamboo project.

Pan Jianfeng – Graphic Designer, Curator  潘剑锋,平面设计师/策展人

Pan studied and graduated with Master Degrees in Visual Communication at the China Academy of Art and University of Central England. He has delivered top branding communication for many international brands in the Chinese market such as Coca-cola, Nike, WWF, Johnnie Walker… Pan has won many international awards including Clio, D&AD, Design for Asia Awards, The Art Directors Club 89th annual Awards, One Show, Adfest, China 4As Golden Seal Awards.

Apart from his professional career, Pan is currently working as partner of Europe-Asia Roundtable Sessions, design curator of Chinese Art Center in Manchester UK, Creative Director of Radical Design Week in Shanghai in order to build a bridge between China and Europe in the field of design.

Pekka Toivonen – Director of Kasino Creative Studio & Art Dictator of FAT (Finnish Art Today)  芬兰 KASINO创意工作室总监兼Finnish Art Today(FAT)
Superstar Art Director of Finland, Pekka Toivonen, is one of the North’s most internationally acclaimed Art & Life characters to date. His darker-than-life melancholic style & method, ranging from premium dirt to slick sick, has been recognised in numerous design publications and galas around the globe. This Cannes Lions, D&AD, SPD and DFA winner is also a heartbent composer, refusing to stick with any yet defined sound of music.

Jasmine Huang – Managing Director at ZH Communications

Jasmine Huang has 13 years experience in advertising industry with abundant knowledge of content creation and production. She has worked for several 4A agencies as executive producer & business director in China & UK. The works she participated won several international advertising awards, such as: Cannes, D&AD, CLIO, One Show, etc. In 2012, Jasmine was invited by D&AD to be one of judges of TV & Cinema Advertising as the only one from China.

ZH Communications is a cutting edge company focusing on branding and visual communications through different mediums.

Jun Li – Senior Feature Editor at ELLE Decoration China & Design Journalist and Curator
Jun Li has been working for ELLE Decoration China on design trends, interviews and feature stories for over three years. She also contributes to various magazines and websites on design, art and lifestyle topics. Besides magazines, Jun is curator of the Graduates exhibition which focuses on young designer talents across China.
